Does Your Red Wine Taste Muted or Flat?

Does Your Red Wine Taste Muted or Flat?

One of the most common questions Grand Cru Wine Fridges’ founder Matthew Gerard receives from customers (or family and friends) is “Why does my red wine taste muted or flat?”. The quick answer is that it’s likely being served at the wrong temperature – too cold, or potentially too warm.

What’s the ideal temperature for red wine?

You should aim to store your aging red wines between 12 and 14 degrees Celsius, but red wines should be served closer to 16 or 18 degrees Celsius. The specific temperature your wine should be stored and served at can vary between varieties.

Red wine is commonly served too warm, especially in Australian homes. When it’s too hot, alcohol can overpower the delicate balance of flavours, leaving the wine tasting heavy and one-dimensional. On the flip side, if it’s been stored too cold, those rich aromas and notes can become suppressed, resulting in a flat tasting experience.

Poor storage conditions can also play a major role in contributing to a flat-tasting wine. Exposure to fluctuating temperatures, light, and inconsistent humidity can gradually degrade the wine, stripping away its complexity over time. A bottle that should be vibrant and expressive can quickly lose its character if it hasn’t been stored correctly.

Can I drink my red wine immediately after opening?

Many red wines benefit from breathing, whether that’s simply letting the wine sit in the glass or using a decanter. Without enough oxygen, the wine can feel closed off and tight, muting its full flavour potential.

For the best wine experience, Matthew recommends letting the wine sit for fifteen to thirty minutes after opening. Alternatively, you can enjoy your wine straight from the fridge with a Grand Cru dual-zone wine fridge. With a dual zone wine fridge, you can store your wines at the perfect cellaring and serving temperatures.
