The Perfect Wine and Chocolate Pairings

You’ve heard of the classic wine and cheese combo, but what about pairing your favourite type of chocolate with its perfect partner in wine? It might not be the most obvious of coupling, but in reality, wine and chocolate pair extremely well together. As with cheese, different types of chocolate work better with different types of wines, so here we have created a nifty guide as to which goes well with which.

Milk Chocolate

Ahh, the classic milk chocolate. A popular choice and go-to for many people. Milk chocolate pairs well with port, sherry, Pinot Noir and Banyuls; generally, the fortified wines are going to be a great match for this favourite.

White Chocolate

It’s not for everyone, but if you’re so inclined towards white chocolate, it goes with Riesling, Champagne, fruity Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat. White chocolate and white wine, it makes sense!

Dark Chocolate

The more sophisticated and acquired taste of the chocolates matches beautifully with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Barolo Chianti and Chianti. Experiment with different percentages of cocoa and see how it goes.

Caramel Chocolate

This decadent chocolate choice is a fine match for Madeira, Meursalt and Pinot Noir. Why not branch out and try a dessert of caramel slice with your evening wine?

Chili Chocolate

Add a bit of sweet and spice to your wine experience and have some chili chocolate with a glass of full-bodied Syrah, Brachetto or Valpolicella. This taste sensation won’t be one to forget too quickly!

Dark Chocolate and Orange

Dark chocolate and orange go hand in hand, but when you’re adding a glass of wine to the mix, it’s a match made in heaven. Opt for a glass of classic Bordeaux, Vendage Tardive or Madeira to enhance your chocolate and wine experience.

Chocolate-Covered Nuts

A drop of Brachetto, tawny port or shiraz will go down beautifully with this sweet treat, while watching a movie on a cosy night in. Divine!

Chocolate-Covered Coffee Beans

Coffee, wine and chocolate are three of the most delightful substances out there, but what if you could have all three, almost at once? If you’re snacking on a few chocolate-covered coffee beans, why not try them with a spot of Oloroso sherry, Pinot Noir or shiraz for an indulgent gustatory experience?
